Most of the time at MTE, we focus on tutorials, reviews, and other practical applications of modern technology. Occasionally, however, some neat new toy pops up that we’ve just got to share. Such is DexOS, and if you’ve got an affinity for custom operating systems or new ways of computing, you might enjoy tinkering with it as much as I do. It’s a custom OS written entirely in assembly, which means it’s FAST and SMALL. How fast and how small? This author has seen it start up in a virtual machine in about 5 seconds, and it can fit on a floppy disc. That’s right, a floppy disc.

First Look at the New Google Operating System – Chrome OS

Back in July, Google made BIG waves in the tech industry by announcing the development of a Google operating system based on Linux. For years there’s been speculation about if/when Google would do this, and when the announcement hit, there was no shortage of people throwing in their two cents on how this new contender would be either the greatest thing in years, or a complete waste of time. Now that Google has finally opened the code for public view, we decided to take a look at what Chrome OS is really all about.
A note about terminology – The official Google products for the browser and OS are Chrome and Chrome OS, respectively. The open source versions are Chromium and Chromium OS. As they’re essentially the same thing, this article will use the terms Chrome and Chrome OS.

Jolicloud – The Innovative OS For The Web-Centric Crowd

For those who are sick of using Windows XP on their netbook and wanted to try out a netbook-efficient and more user friendly OS, then Jolicloud could well be the one heading to your netbook.
Jolicloud is a new Linux distro based on the Ubuntu Netbook Remix, but specifically optimized for netbook devices. What make it stands out from the rest is its Web services that delivers a whole new Web-centric experience to its users (we will discuss more on that later).
Jolicloud is currently at closed alpha testing stage and only offer download on an invitation basis. The download is a LiveCD installer of around 600MB, distributed in iso format. You will have to use a USB creator software to mount the iso file on a USB drive before you can use it to install on a netbook.
