Pivot Design Makes Me Love Open-Ear Earbuds

While I’ve used some good open-ear conduction earbuds, I always struggle to get a good fit with my smaller ears. Plus, I have long hair that always seems to get in the way.

The OpenRock X Open-Ear Earbuds don’t rely on the usual flexible hook design. Instead, they use a dual-axis precision pivot design, aka a hinge. This tiny little hinge lets you pivot side-to-side up to 45 degrees or up/down up to 50 degrees.

What impressed me the most is that the hook stays exactly how you position it. I expected some sort of locking design, but it’s stepless and sturdy. Even after hours of wear, the earbuds never moved unless I moved them because I’m able to adjust the fit after putting them on.

The pivoting design also makes these easier to put on. If you’ve ever struggled to put on open-ear earbuds, these are a breeze.

Immersive Sound After a Few Tweaks

I’ll be honest: the default sound profile is a bit “meh.” It’s good enough for podcasts, but for music, you don’t really get the full experience until you adjust the sound profile in the companion app.

That’s a shame, as the OpenRock X Open-Ear Earbuds boasts a BassDirect Bass cavity, theater-like spatial sound, 14.2 mm custom dynamic driver, LISO 2.0 algorithm for clear audio, and HiFi 5 DSP. All of this combines for a more immersive experience than you’d expect from an open-ear design.

The OpenRock app lets you choose between several sound profiles or create your own. Take your time to tweak the settings. Also, make sure you toggle on Spatial Sound for even better sound quality. It’s not on by default.

The three built-in modes include:

OpenRock app settings and sound profiles.
  • Rock (my favorite) – features deeper bass and works well with more rhythmic audio.
  • Relax – provides a more even sound distribution. Ideal for classical, lo-fi, and ambient sounds.
  • Boom – perfect for a more immersive experience, thanks to increased noise canceling.

Just remember that these are designed to allow in some background noise. Even with immersive sound, these won’t cancel out all background sounds.

Noise-Canceling Mics Keep Calls Clear

Trying to have a conversation with traffic, wind, or ambient chatter around you isn’t easy. Both parties end up just saying “huh?” a lot. The four AI-powered mics do an incredible job of filtering out everything but the voices of those on the call.

I was surprised these worked so well. I expected to hear far more background noise. Instead, callers came through loud and clear.

No, the OpenRock X Open-Ear Earbuds don’t completely cancel out all noise. First, these are open-ear earbuds. All earbuds like this allow you to still hear what’s going on around you. But they do provide the perfect balance between staying aware of your surroundings and not getting so overwhelmed that you can’t hear your calls or music.

Easily Connect to Two Devices

I tend to bounce back and forth between using my computer and my phone. These open-ear earbuds feature Bluetooth 5.3 multipoint pairing. I can connect to my phone and my PC and switch seamlessly as needed.

It’s nice playing Spotify on my PC while I’m working, then switching in a second to my phone when I get a call. There’s no annoying disconnecting and reconnecting.

Battery Life That Keeps Up With You

I’m guilty of forgetting to charge my devices. I’m able to get nearly 12 hours on a single charge. And the charging case lets you extend that to up to 48 hours.

Short USB cable connected to charging case.

The OpenRock X Open-Ear Earbuds come with a USB-C cable to quickly charge them. The cable is incredibly short, but that does make it easier to drop in your bag or luggage without it tangling. I also appreciate a charging cable included when so many devices don’t include them anymore.

No time to wait? Just five minutes of charge gives you up to one hour of listening time.

Sophisticated Case With Carrying Clip

Like many earbuds, these are designed with an active lifestyle in mind. They’re even IPX5 water resistant, so sweat and rain aren’t going to ruin your fun.

Straight out of the box, I loved the charging case. This isn’t the usual clamshell designed to stuff in a pocket.

The rectangular box securely holds the OpenRock X Open-Ear Earbuds. Press in the bottom, and the earbuds pop out in a holding tray. What’s even more impressive is that they stay put in the tray until you physically remove them. You don’t have to worry about them falling out.

There’s a Bluetooth pairing button on the case, but after the initial pairing, they automatically connect to your device(s) as soon as you open the case.

If you don’t have a pocket, use the included clip to attach the case to a bag, belt loop, etc.

No Accidental Touches

While I love the convenience of touch controls on earbuds, I also get frustrated with accidental touches that pause, stop, and skip songs, just because I brush my hair back behind my ears.

The OpenRock X Open-Ear Earbuds feature a physical button just under the earpiece itself. All I have to do to control them is tap the button. I suggest holding the top and bottom of the earbud to keep it from moving.

During my review, I had no issues with an earbud popping out of place when using the button.

Stylish and Comfy, Though Larger Than Average

At first, you may be put off that the earpiece itself is a bit larger than many other open-ear earbuds. I honestly thought it’d be uncomfortable, but it’s surprisingly comfortable and provides a better overall fit.

I also didn’t expect them to feel as light as they did. I assumed the blockier earpiece would cause more weight and ear fatigue, but I’m happy to report I was wrong. If you feel any pinching, just adjust the hinge.

These are also rather stylish. Having a different design than most other earbuds makes them stand out. Plus, they’re available in three colors: black, white, and orange.

Perfect for Sports or Casual Use

Overall, the OpenRock X Open-Ear Earbuds are ideal for a more active lifestyle or just casual, everyday use. They’re comfortable, long-lasting, and provide one of the best fits I’ve ever tried. I personally would love just a bit more bass, but that’s just my preference.
