There’s a moment that arrives every year now, usually somewhere around October, when you catch yourself saying it: “How is it already October?”

You said it last year too. And the strange part is that you didn’t say it at nineteen. At nineteen, a single summer was a geological era. A school year was a lifetime. Somewhere between then and now, the years started folding shut like a magician’s deck — and most of us have quietly accepted the standard explanation, which is that this is simply what aging does.

But researchers who study time perception have been circling a more interesting answer. The years might not feel shorter because you’re older. They might feel shorter because of what your calendar looks like — and that, unlike your age, is something you can actually change.

Your brain doesn’t measure time — it counts memories

Here’s the mechanism, and once you understand it, the whole mystery reorganizes itself.

When you look back at a stretch of life and judge how long it felt, your brain isn’t consulting a clock. It has no clock for the past. What it does instead is closer to an archaeological dig: it checks how much stuff got preserved from that period. Psychologists studying retrospective time have found that periods rich in novel, significant experiences feel longer, while routine collapses duration — memory density is the measuring stick.

This is why a week of travel feels enormous in the rearview mirror while a month of ordinary work evaporates. The travel week deposited fifty distinct memories. The work month deposited three, because your brain — ruthlessly efficient — declined to individually store twenty commutes it had already seen.

And this is the real engine of the aging effect. Childhood isn’t slower because young brains run differently, or not only that. Childhood is slower because it’s wall-to-wall firsts — as one neuroscientist put it, we gauge time by memorable events, and fewer new things happen as we age. First kiss, first job, first apartment: each one a boulder in the riverbed of memory. Adult life, left to its own devices, sands the riverbed smooth. And a smooth riverbed is exactly what fast water feels like.

The smear

Give the failure mode a hard look, because you’re probably living a version of it right now.

Think about February of this year. Not the concept of February — the actual days. What happened on, say, the second Tuesday?

If you’re like most adults, the answer isn’t a memory. It’s an inference: well, it was a Tuesday, so presumably I worked, presumably there was dinner… The day existed. You were conscious for all of it. But it was assembled entirely from reusable parts — same route, same lunch, same shows — so your brain stored one generic template and threw the rest away. Memory researchers describe repeated experiences getting filed so close together that they become indistinguishable, like identical folders in a drawer.

Multiply that by three hundred similar days, and you get the signature experience of modern adulthood: the smear. A year that was fully lived but barely recorded — and therefore, in retrospect, barely happened. When you gasp “how is it October,” you’re not really asking about time. You’re staring at eleven months of missing footage.

Nobody chose this. Routine is what competence looks like from the inside — the efficient life runs on rails precisely because rails work. But the same rails that make a life smooth make it unmemorable, and unmemorable is what “fast” is made of.

Temporal landmarks: the disruptions that make time visible

So what stops the smear? Not big events, it turns out. Something smaller and much more available.

Psychologists use the term temporal landmarks for the moments that stand out from the flat terrain of routine and structure how we perceive time — the way a church spire structures a landscape. Some are handed to us: birthdays, new years, first days. But the research points somewhere more practical: landmarks can be manufactured, and they don’t need to be dramatic to work. What matters is disruption — anything that forces the brain out of template mode and back into recording mode.

The evidence for routine’s role here is oddly charming: studies tracking holiday seasons found that people who kept the most predictable daily rhythms felt Christmas arrive sooner every year — the routine itself was compressing the calendar. Meanwhile researchers following older adults note that the ones who keep learning skills and seeking variety report a sharper, slower sense of time. One writer summarized the principle perfectly: variety keeps the brain’s camera clicking.

That’s the reframe worth keeping. The camera is always there. Routine just convinces it there’s nothing worth shooting.

Why small beats big

Here’s the mistake people make when they hear all this: they conclude they need a bigger life. More trips, grander adventures, a sabbatical. And then, since none of that is happening before Q3, they change nothing.

But look at the mechanism again. The brain doesn’t require impressive. It requires different. A memory gets encoded richly when the day contains something the existing templates can’t cover — and the threshold for that is embarrassingly low. A new recipe on a Wednesday. A different walking route. Breakfast for dinner. A conversation with someone outside your usual six people. A room rearranged. None of these will make a highlight reel. Every one of them makes the day un-templatable — which means the day survives.

This is also why the strategy compounds so well at the weekly scale. One genuine disruption per week is fifty-two landmarks a year. Fifty-two spires on the landscape, where last year had maybe nine. The year doesn’t get longer. It gets legible — and legible is what “slower” feels like from the inside.

There’s even a bonus effect the researchers didn’t expect: anticipation. A landmark on the calendar ahead of you — the class you booked, the visit you planned — stretches time in both directions, because the weeks before it stop being identical too. You’re no longer in week-whatever. You’re in the week before the thing.

An experiment for the last stretch of the year

So here’s the practical takeaway, sized to fit an actual life.

Look at the months left in this year — the ones currently on track to become smear. Now plant landmarks in them, deliberately, at the rate of one a week. Small is fine. Small is, per the research, the entire point. Write them down if you want the effect doubled; reflecting on a day in detail appears to deepen how distinctly it gets stored.

Then, in December, run the test that started this article. Ask yourself where the year went.

For once, you might actually know — because for once, there will be footage. Not because time slowed down. Time never changes speed.

You just started giving your brain something worth remembering. Which, as far as your future self is concerned, is the same thing.
