Some Apple Intelligence tools will add an invisible SynthID watermark to images that users create or edit, starting with iOS 27.2, iPadOS 27.2, macOS 27.2 and visionOS 27.2, Apple said in a support document published on 5 November 2026.
The watermark can help identify that an image was created or modified using AI, Apple said. It is imperceptible to people and does not change how the image looks, but can be read by a SynthID detector.
Which tools add the watermark
In Photos, the document lists Clean Up, Extend and Spatial Reframing. It also lists Image Playground and Image Wand.
Apple’s wording is that “some Apple Intelligence tools will add an invisible SynthID watermark to images that you create or edit”.
Checking an image at synthid.com
To check an image for a watermark, Apple said to go to synthid.com in a web browser and upload an image, then follow the on-screen steps to see the result.
The same site is given in the document as the place to learn more about images that carry SynthID watermarks.
Images edited before the update
Images created or edited before a device is updated to iOS 27.2, iPadOS 27.2 or macOS 27.2 will not have a SynthID watermark until they are edited with one of the listed tools, Apple said.
