You can count e.g. dvd players produced by big factories such as Sony, Philips etc. and only few of them support srt,sub and divx.

But if you count huge amount of cheap dvd players, you will find that srt and sub is mostly supported.

Actually, most standalone players don't support srt/sub subtitles and many don't support playing mp4. But most standalone players support playing divx and the associated subtitles format (xsub). In my case, I'm trying to use this with PS3.

I don't know any Linux tool for that. Generally, you should avoid using such proprietary, badly supported (and already obsolete) formats that belong to a single company. The standalone devices generally support regular .srt/.sub subtitles anyway (and there are Linux .srt editors available, or you can just use a text editor). Plus, the future is in modern, standard formats like MP4 and Matroska (they both support subtitles, and Matroska is the new format for DivX, too).

Do you know if there is a tool for linux (like AVIAddXSubs for windows) that can insert X-Subs into avi files. This ensures that we can add subtitles to files to be played in a standalone device easily and without video conversion so it takes only a couple of minutes.
I know AVIAddXSubs can be run under wine but I was looking towards a native linux solution and especially if a command line option is there so I can automate the whole things.

Also, Avidemux is not GNOME-based. Avidemux offers three user interfaces - GTK+ (not GNOME) UI, Qt (not KDE) UI, and a command line UI. Also, the most important thing with Avidemux was not mentioned - when you use filters, such as the Subtitler filter, you have to select a video encoder. That is, reencode the video. Otherwise you cannot add/apply video filters (the fact that you can bypass the protection using the "Video->Filters" menu instead of the Filters button is just a glitch, not the way it's supposed to be used).

FYI, Kino is GTk/Gnome, not a KDE app. You can tell because it's so limited. ;)

Seriously though, very nice list here. Another DVD Authoring application is QDVDAuthor, which I absolutely love. It is very powerful but also a bit too complex at times, but only when I am trying to do something complex, so its nice in that it allows me to do such things.
