keybindings, configs seem really important to some- but I just want things to work!

I dont know why or where I saw lxde(I sometimes use xfce) but the moment I got it for my 555mhz low power VIA eden ,I immediately replaced GNOME on my slow single core laptop. It also gets my signifiant others approval - she too just wants things to work quickly.

I know how fast win2k and XP can run on a fresh pc so I know I dont need to wait for 0.5seconds for menus to appear, things to go - lxde helps me from getting impatient with kde or gnome on old hardware!!!!

It just works! Im not sure how to add a volume control but alsamixer in a terminal window so until my noobness can google the result thatl do!

[...] Taking LXDE For a Test Drive I found LXDE to a pretty nice desktop environment. It’s certainly fast, comes with a reasonable amount of good quality tools, and a nice appearance. There’s room for improvement, however, particularly when it comes to configuration. I would count it as a good option for recent Windows converts, particularly those with older hardware that might have trouble running a beefier desktop such as Gnome or KDE. Has it pulled me away from my beloved Window Maker? I don’t think so, but it’s progressing nicely and I’d love to see what the developers come up with down the road. [...]

According to the LXDE blog (blog.lxde.org) LXNM will be rewritten, hopefully doing a great job this time =)

As a side note I heard that one of the developers have done a first version of a config application, I have no idea how long he got with it and/or if he had released anything but it might pop up something to rescue the weak points above soon.

I love LXDE, being a KDE guy and working with fluxgen of fluxbox it's hard to stick to LXDE but still doing it.

I'm running LXDE on testing/unstable at the moment and so far workspace switching hasn't been a problem for me. It's lxde-core version 0.3.2.1+svn20080509-5 if that helps.

I played with the latest KNOPPIX live CD (basically Debian Lenny + LXDE). In live mode desktop switcher/pager functionality did not work. I could not switch between workspaces. I tried to set it up to have only 1 desktop/workspace, but winodow menu was still offering an option to send window to another desktops (that I could not switch to later on). I did not proceed with the installation. Did anybody else run into this?

I have personally found LXDE to be intriguing but lacking for all the reasons noted.

For that reason, I am currently playing with Fragadelic's debian LXDE distro that bundles an installer and backup in remastersys LXDE Lite.
http://www.geekconnection.org/remastersys/

Much closer to what a distro should be for HW challenged older PC's and even current desktops. Recommend it.

I recently bought a refurbished IBM Thinkpad T42, and installed Debian Lenny (Gnome) on it. I don't particularly like Nautilus, so I replaced that with Openbox. I also installed LXDE as an option, as I do like it very much, aside from, as you said, LXNM. I use the Gnome applet for that, and it works beautifully.
