When you jump back and forth from a computer and your Android phone all day long, it is an inconvenience and a distraction to need to keep looking at your phone just to see who the SMS was from. Accessing your Android phone from the web is the logical route.

Androidonweb.com is a free application to help you manage the activities you would normally do on your phone. Using Androidonweb, you can access your photo gallery, SMS messages, contacts and your phone’s location.

Setting up Androidonweb

The only download is from the Android Market. Once you have it installed on your phone, you can start the app. It will sign in using the main Gmail account associated with your phone.

On the web side of it, you will need to go to http://androidonweb.com and log in with that same Gmail account. It may take a minute for you to see anything, but it should show up with a screen like this when the Android phone is paired with the web app.

Using Androidonweb

Not much action is required on the phone after you grant access to the application. When you log in and the device is paired with the web app, all you really can do on the phone is turn on and off some notifications.

On the web is a different story; that’s where you are going to do pretty much everything. Like I mentioned earlier, you will need to login with your Google Account. When everything syncs up, you should see something like this.

As you can see, there are a 5 tabs across the top of the window. You start out on the contacts tab. You can edit your contacts right from here. You can also email them by clicking on the @ icon. Clicking the phone icon didn’t seem to connect the call to my phone. Maybe this feature will be added later.

The text message tab is probably the tab where you will spend most of your time. You can initiate a message to anyone in your contact list by clicking the compose button and starting to type their name in the green bar. If the person isn’t in your contacts, you can type in their number.

When you press send, the message will magically be sent from your phone. If you’d like to see what was sent from your phone, you can look in the Tasks tab on your phone.

The gallery works pretty much the same as the SMS tab. You can see your pictures when you take them.

Finding the location of your phone could be a great feature if your Android phone is lost or stolen. To see the location, you can click on the location tab and view its location on Google Maps.

Conclusion

While testing Androidonweb, it worked great. The location was really close, the contacts and gallery were accurate. One part of the text messaging made it a bit difficult to follow the SMS thread. The messages were separated into incoming and outgoing, not a back and forth like I am accustomed to. There are options to sort the messages, I couldn’t make it work as a back and forth conversation though.

What other applications do you use to manage your Android phone from the web?

There are so many software in the World Wide Web and the last thing that we will need is to have yet another email inbox to check. However, if you have difficulty surfing the Web, accessing your Twitter or Facebook, and you can’t kick those habits, Flexamail has got one of the best solution around, by allowing you to access them all in your inbox.

Flexamail is an email sevice, yet it is not the email service that you use to check for mail everyday. Sound confusing? To make it more explicit, Flexamail is a web service that can send your Web content, Twitter or Facebook update to your personal inbox. All you need to do is to send an email to the respective Flexamail email account and it will automate the process for you.

Signing up

Flexamail is a personalize service, so you will need to sign up an account with them. You will need to sign up with your primary email address (or the email that you will be regularly accessing. My advise, don’t use your office email). This email address will be the primary tool you use to communicate with Flexamail.

Using Flexamail

There are several ways that you can make good use of Flexamail. You can:

Access popular sites like Twitter and Facebook all from your email without needing a proxy

Avoid pesky firewalls getting in your way, access websites and services regardless to your office or country’s firewall settings

Post, share and track any type of files and images online

Password protect those files you don’t want made public

Securely backup your files online

Save money on your cellphone plan with an email only data plan

Publish a photo from your iPhone or Blackberry without needing to open an app

Stay organized with sortable, sharable, drag and drop lists

To be able to access your Twitter and Facebook account, you will first need to give permission to Flexamail to access your account.

To receive update for your Twitter or Facebook account, all you have to do is to send a blank email (from the email address that you signed up Flexamail with) to twitter@flexamail.com or facebook@flexamail.com respectively.

It will then reply you with a mail consisting all the updates in your Twitter/Facebook account.

Similarly, you can send email to facebookwall@flexamail.com to post to your Facebook wall, tweet@flexamail.com to send a tweet, and many other Twitter related services.

Surfing the Web

To surf the web with Flexamail, you can send an email to www@flexamail.com and insert the Website URL as the subject of the email. You will then receive an email of the website you wish to view.

Need to perform a search on Google? No worry, just send a mail to google@flexamail.com with the search terms as the subject.

You can also add your favorite sites (up to 4) to Flexamail and get it to retrieve content from those sites with the email favs@flexamail.com

Other services

Other services provide by Flexamail include uploading and storing your files (including encrypted files) and images and also creating a to-do list. More features will also be added in the near future.

Conclusion

Flexamail will be slow and redundant if you have full access to the web. But if you are in an office environment where (almost) everything online is blocked, except for your email address, then Flexamail will be a good way to continue to keep in touch with the Web.

Recently, we reviewed some of the useful browsers for Android. Even though we tried our best to be comprehensive, we still missed out on a few gems. And thanks to all of you who commented, we have uncovered another gem – xScope browser.

At first glance, I didn’t think xScope was anything noteworthy. It has a plain icon and unattractive interface. Anyone who are casually browsing the market can easily give it a miss. However, after using it, I began to like it. While the main features are similar to all other browsers, the subtle thing in the browser are what set itself apart from the rest.

Tabs

While other browsers also come with tabs, xScope makes the tabs pretty accessible. This isn’t always the case with other browsers.

While you are surfing the mobile web, you can open as many tabs as you need. When it is time to go back and access the previous tabs, you can press the Menu button on your Android phone. There is an icon in the menu bar that, when pressed, will show all of the open tabs.

To quickly add a tab while browsing, press the [+] plus sign on the upper tab bar. This will open a new window showing the bookmark page.

Bookmark page

A cool option many browsers do not offer is different views on your bookmark page. xScope gives you 3 views – Icon, List and Snapshot.

If this is not enough, you can also sort by Most Visited, Title or Date Created. This is a great way to save you time and increase your productivity.

Control bar

When you press the Menu button, the control bar is displayed. In the control bar, you can select Bookmarks, History, Download History, Search the SD card for files, Settings and Close.

Gestures

The gestures are not as fancy as Dolphin HD, but the options you do have will make xScope much faster to use.

By quickly swiping left or right to change tabs, you can easily find the window you want. Other browsers make you press the menu button then select something to see different tabs.

Revealing the Android notification bar when in fullscreen view is as simple as swiping from the top of the window down.

Pinpoint zoom is a pretty cool resizing gesture. Double tap like normal. On the second tap, drag your finger on screen. This is a fast way to get a more exact zoom. Many browsers just have a set percent they will zoom in when double tapped. Then you will need to use the [+] or [-] buttons to zoom in more.

Settings

Like a few other browsers, you can add themes to xScope. The themes offer cosmetic changes to the browser. There are different themes available in the Market. Depending on the degree to which they change the browser, there may be a cost for the themes.

You can change the location of the control bar. The control, by default is on the bottom of the screen. You can reposition it to the top of the screen if you prefer.

A unique setting is the ability to change the user-agent of the browser. This alone is not unique, being able to select between iPad or iPhone view is the one that set it apart from the rest.

In the Settings menu, you can customize device’s buttons (e.g.:menu press or menu long press). If you do a lot of web browsing, knowing the shortcuts to open a link in a new tab or showing the page options will make for a better browsing experience.

Conclusion

I used the free trial of xScope and found it is worth the 2.99 to buy. It does have some unique features, easy to use and is really fast. Recommended!

Is there any other features of xScope that I have missed out?

Everything these days is geared toward social. Whether it is an application for the web or mobile, there will always be a way to share information with others.

Because of the digital trend toward the social aspect of the web, it is natural there would be applications to help you search and track information on the social web. 48ers is one of those.

On a Personal basis

For the everyday Joe, there are a few benefits to a social search engine like 48ers. One of the most popular reasons for using this type of search is for researching a product you’d like to purchase. You can enter in a product name and see what people are currently saying about that product.

Sure you can go onto Twitter and search there or ask the people who follow you what they think, then head over to Facebook and post a question there, then mozy on over to Google Buzz and do the same thing.

It is much easier to do it all in one search. Plus you will be searching other sites along with the 3 big name sites.

From Business point of view

Businesses are using social search engines for much more than being social. It is life or death these days to know what people are saying about you. More so than when you were the popular kid in high school.

Being able to search multiple sites at the same time is a real time saver for businesses taking social media and their online presence seriously. Tracking a hastag for an event, a brand, product or anything else is much easier when you can search multiple sites simultaneously.

What makes 48ers cool

If you are one of the 80% of the Googlers out there, you will see a striking similarity to your favorite search engine. The simplicity makes it feel like home when you are searching the social web.

In the left sidebar, you will see the sites 48ers is pulling results from. If you would like to filter your results you can do so by clicking on the site you want to see the results from. When filtering the results, you can only see one site at a time.

I really like how they have a “Useful Searches” section in the sidebar. There are some searches in there that are kind of “ah-ha moment” searches. I mean, they make complete sense when you see them, yet you didn’t think to search for.

What site is the result from?

When you perform a search for any term, you can see the logo of the social site at the beginning of each result in the list. Results from social bookmarking sites don’t always show a logo because they aren’t from a social site like Twitter.

Overall, there isn’t a lot to show with a search engine. Even though there is a lot of potential uses for a social search engine, everyone will use it differently. Play around a little and try different search types. Use the filters, try the suggested searches to see what you come up with.

The social web is not an exact science even though many people claim to know it all. Spend the time getting to know the basics and the rest of the time searching for and talking to people with similar interests. That’s what the whole social thing is all about.

What do you use social search engines for?

You know all the web browsers, right? At least, all the REAL browsers. There’s Firefox, Safari, Opera, Chrome, and of course Internet Explorer. It’s not likely any more little guys could join a game with players like that, right? If you were to try Midori, the WebKit-based GTK web browser for Linux and Windows, you might start to rethink your answer to that question. It’s small, fast, scriptable, gesture-ready and passes the Acid3 test with flying colors. Can it really hold up against the engineering efforts of industry giants like Google, Apple, and Microsoft? We aim to find out.

Note – While the Midori website does contain links to a Windows binary, this article is focused on the Linux version.

Getting Midori

If your distribution contains the XFCE desktop environment, there’s a pretty good chance it’ll have Midori as well. Ubuntu users can find it in the Ubuntu Software Center, click here or with the command line

sudo apt-get install midori

If not, a tarball for installation can be found here.

The Basics

As you can see in the screenshot below, Midori has a layout pretty similar to Firefox. The toolbars, input boxes, and menu items are laid out much like you’d find in many other browsers. Tabs in Midori are shown below the address bar, as opposed to Chrome which displays them above.

The address bar has the history searching features we’ve all grown used to, allowing quick access to previously visited sites, and includes options to search for your term using the provider of your choice.

Speed Dial

Midori is certainly not without unique features of its own, one of which is the Speed Dial page which is opened when you create a new tab. At first glance it looks a bit like Chrome’s New Tab page, but it operates differently. Where Chrome would build a table of sites based on your web history, Midori just provides a blank slate to create a simple start page of your own.

Just click on any item and provide the address of the site you want to link, and a title. Midori will fetch a screenshot of that site for you.

Web Application Support

Many of you may be thinking “looks fine and all, but can it run Flash/Java/HTML5/AJAX?” and many other acronyms. In short, Midori seems to be capable of using many of Firefox’s content plugins. Flash, which had been previously installed on the Ubuntu Lucid test machine used for this review, worked immediately in Midori. Moonlight (the open source Silverlight implementation) did not function in Midori but the Quicktime, Google Talk, and Java plugins seem to be working properly.

To test standards compliance, I used the well known Acid3 test. This runs a browser through an extremely thorough test suite to verify standards compliance. If a browser scores well on Acid, it’s a very good sign that it will operate properly with the modern web. Midori very quickly scored the full 100 points.

It didn’t do quite as well for HTML5, though I should point out that HTML5 is still a draft specification and not yet finalized, so it would be rather difficult for any browser to be fully compliant at this point. Still the results from HTML5Test.com give us a fairly mediocre score of 187, as compared to Chrome 6′s score of 217, and Firefox 3.6′s score of 193.

Problems

Midori is not without its share of problems. For example, in the time it has taken to write this review, Midori has so far crashed twice unexpectedly. Normally, that would be reason enough for me to toss it out and maybe check back later, but there are enough complelling features in Midori that it seems worthwhile to focus on the good aspects and trust that stability will be improved in later releases.

The only issue that I would consider poor design is the handling of the text in the address bar. An “empty” address bar is not empty, it points to res:/. This means that if by chance you might happen to want to go to… oh I don’t know… a web site, you have to remove that text first before entering your query ip address.

On top of that, the res:/ text is inserted even when opening a new tab. This means that if you were to do the normal action of hitting Ctrl+T for a new tab then entering your address, you must now first clear out the existing text, otherwise you’ll end up with something like “google.comres:/” in your address bar.

Conclusion

There are a few things about Midori to tip you off to the fact that it’s a small independant project, but for the most part it’s a surprisingly capable browser with a lot of clever design behind it. Aesthetically it may not be able to compete with some of the other popular browsers, but it’s got all the functionality necessary to act as a primary browser for all but the most picky of Internet users. If the developers can iron out a few of the stability and usability problems, it might just make the big names take notice.

I’ve just watched a beautiful animation titled “The Secret of Kells”. I’m not going to spoil anything by telling you the story here, but I can tell you that the movie described how hard the process of writing a book was back in the middle age. It required top notch craftsmanship to write each and every word and to illustrate each page by hand. It took two generations to finish “just” one book.

When we compare that condition with what we have here today; with computers, word processors, smart phones, internet and all the modern technologies (and without the barbaric Vikings lurking in the dark); we should feel so lucky. Moreover, with the help of Simplenote, you could set up a multi platform writing environment that you can use to write, continue, and finish your book(s) anytime, anywhere and using any available devices at hand.

Step One: The Web Version

The first thing to set up is the web version. You could say that this is the bridge that connects everything else. If you haven’t got yourself an account, go to Simplenote’s site and click the green “Create An Account” button. Otherwise, “Sign In” with your account.

The web version of Simplenote gives users common features of note taking apps such as add notes (+), search notes, sort by tag, Trash and Pin, add tags, and writing the notes itself.

But the one feature that amazed me is the ability to view the older version of a note by moving the “Version History” slider more to the left. This feature allows you to see sentences from the past, maybe the ones that you’ve deleted but you want to retrieve back. If you are writing a book, keeping all versions of a text is essential.

And when you are ready to move beyond the web app, Simplenote gives you tons of options of accessing its service. You can view the complete list at the download page. Here are few of them.

Step Two: The Mobiles

Simplenote comes with free native iDevices apps. So if you are iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad users, you can go and download, install and use the apps from here.

Since these apps are from the people behind Simplenote, the apps comes with all the goodies that the web version has including viewing the older version of the note. There are also other features that I couldn’t find on the web version: the ability to share notes and publish them as web pages.

There are also other mobile apps made by others for other platforms, for example: Noted! [Palm webOS], mNote [Android], AndroNoter [Android], and SolidNote [Android]

Step Three: The Desktops

Simplenote shines in the number of desktop applications from third party developers that support the services. This means that users can use various type of desktop app to take notes, and the notes will be synchronized automatically with their account.

There are quite a few desktop apps available for Mac and Windows, such as: Notational Velocity [Mac], JustNotes [Mac], Notes [Windows] and Resoph Notes [Windows].

Unfortunately, there’s no desktop app for Linux users – yet. But…

Step Four: The Others

Support for synchronization with Simplenote account doesn’t stop at application level. There are add on for Firefox (QuickFox Notes) and Google Chrome Extensions which can help users quickly add and sync their notes from within their browsers.

This solution is perfect for Linux users who don’t have access to Mac or Windows and the Simplenote-friendly note taking desktop applications.

Step Five: The Usage

Using Simplenote and the multi platform writing environment is as simple as starting notes in one device and picking up where we left in another device. For example, you had an idea when you are on the road, then you could quickly jot down the idea via Simplenote in your iPhone. Then your note would be automatically synchronized to your account, and you could continue cooking your idea at the moment you turn on your computer at work or home.

Of course Simplenote is not the only alternative of multi platform note taking environment. We also have Evernote, Dropbox, and other similar services. But the reason I fell in love with Simplenote is – as the name suggested – because of its simplicity.

Do you use Simplenote? Or do you prefer other note taking method? Share your thoughts and opinion using the comment below.

Everyone has their personal favorite start page for their browser. Some like iGoogle, some need a little more information. There have been several articles written on Make Tech Easier about different options. Reviews of 43Marks, iGoogle, myHomepage and a homepage battle have all graced the pages here. This will add another style homepage to the list.

Kadaza is a more visual homepage. It works in a similar way as many of the others, but adds a little bit of flair. It looks pretty simple, but it has a lot of variety; over 25.000 different preset sites. The best part is, there is no account to sign up for.

To start out, go to http://kadaza.com you will see the standard start page. The page will have 24 different logos for popular sites. To go to the site, click on the logo. Pretty straight forward stuff.

You will also see 22 other categories to the left. By choosing one of these categories, you will see logos that have to do with travel or career or dating.

When you are in a category like photo for example, you will see some links over to the right of the logos. These are sub-categories. It further narrows your the choices to very specific sites; many of which I did not know existed.

Now that you have explored a little and you have a feel for how things work, it is time to add the sites you really want. Just above the block of 24 logos, click on customize. The only differences you will see on the screen are arrows in the top right corner of the individual logos and where it used to say customize, it now says Finished? click here.

To change the site logo, click on the arrow. This will open up a pop-up window will show an address bar and a list of popular sites. Type in the name of the site you wish to see and hit enter. A list of the most relevant results will display. Pick the one you want by clicking on the text.

If you do not find the site you are looking for, you can send them an email to have it added. Don’t worry, Make Tech Easier is on there. ;-)

To make things a little more usable, you can drag and drop the logos into an order that makes the most sense for you. When you have everything just the way you want it, you can click Finished? click here. This will save everything.

The last step is to make Kadaza your home page. It is not any different from adding iGoogle or Netvibes as your homepage. If you need help, click on the link just below the lock of 24 logos for instructions.

With all of the homepages out there, the final decision comes from how it fits your needs and browsing habits. I have mentioned before how for the start page for Portable Firefox, I like something very light weight and not a lot of graphics so it loads fast. On my other browsers I tend to use iGoogle or something similar. Even if you have something that works for you, it doesn’t hurt to know what else is out there; it may work even better.

What needs do you have in your homepage?

Suppose you are reading a webpage with long paragraphs of content and want to share it with your friend. The good old way of sharing content is shorten the URL and send to your friend via Twitter, Facebook or Email. But there is a problem when your friend opens the webpage and starts reading.

He/she may want to quickly grasp the idea on what the page is all about and why you have shared the link with him. He may not like reading long paragraphs of introduction and may quit reading the page altogether.

If you want to share snippets of content from a webpage, you need a smart note making tool at your disposal. Note making tools are different from bookmarking tools – you can select particular portions of a webpage, store it in your account and then share it with anyone. The advantage of using a note tool is that you can customize the snippet as you like and it works really fast !

There are quite a few browser extensions and desktop software available for note making but I recommend using a web based tool for two reasons. The first reason is that you don’t have to download or install anything. Secondly, you can use the web interface to capture content from any computer, customize it and share it with anyone.

Capture Snippets of Content Using Memonic

First, go to the Memonic website and sign up for a free account. There are 4 different ways to capture snippets of content from the web using Memonic. Let’s see each of them in full detail:

1. Capture Content using the Memonic Bookmarklet:

Drag and drop the memonic bookmarklet in your bookmarks toolbar

Now when you want to capture snippets from a webpage, hit the bookmarklet and memonic will let you select portions of the webpage as shown below:

You can also add a Title and description to your snippet using the “Save this URL” button placed adjacent to the “Save Snippet” button. Entering a Title and description will be useful when you want to know from which webpage you have saved the snippet.

After you have saved your snippet, go to your Memonic inbox and you will see the snippet listed as a new item

You can perform a lot of activities with your items from the Memonic inbox. This includes sharing your items with anyone on Facebook or Twitter, adding items to sets or groups, editing permissions and lots more. We will see all those options but first lets learn other ways of capturing snippets using Memonic.

2. Capture Content From a URL:

If you don’t want to use any browser bookmarklet, you can use the “Paste URL’ text box within your Memonic account. Simply paste the URL of the webpage from where you would want to save snippets and Memonic will open the page for you.

Now click on “Start Clipping”, select the portion of the page you want to save and hit “Save as”. The snippet from the webpage will be saved as a new item in your Memonic Inbox.

3. Save a Web Snippet From Your Email

This is my favorite way of saving snippets in Memonic inbox. Consider a situation: You are reading a webpage and want to save multiple paragraphs containing text and images as a new item in your Memonic inbox. You don’t want to login to Memonic or use the browser bookmarklet. In such cases, you can simply compose a new email and paste the text part to be saved as a snippet. Then attach all the images as email attachments and send the email to post@memonic.com

Your email message will be converted into a clip and all the images will be attached to the clip. This feature will be useful when you want to share an email conversation with some of your friends. Just forward the email to post@memonic.com, save it as a clip and share the entire email message with whoever you want.

4. Compose a Clip From Memonic Dashboard

If you want to compose and save a customized clip, login to your Memonic account and go to New -> Compose. You will be shown a WYSIWYG editor where you can compose a clip, paste text from various sources, add links and images from a web URL and save it in your Memonic account.

This feature will be useful when you want to customize paragraphs from different sources and aggregate stuff at one place.

Managing your Web Clippings

Creating web clippings is just half the work done, you should also know how to manage and organize your notes and clippings. Memonic lets you create sets which acts just like Email labels, you can move multiple clippings to create a set.

To create a “Set”, all you have to do is click the small “Plus” icon from the sidebar and enter a name for your set. Then select the desired clips from your Memonic inbox and drag and drop them in the created set.

Memonic gives you an embed code for the created set and thus you can embed the clippings on your blog or website. The set can be made public or private and you can also share a set via Email, Facebook or Twitter.

The groups tab lets you add collaborators to your sets, you can invite your friends to join Memonic and contribute to your collection. This is very useful, you can add multiple peoples to a set and all of them can add bits of information at one place.

There are tools like Evernote and Google Notebook but I think Memonic is a much simpler option. The free account lets you store up to 100 notes, if you want more you can upgrade to a premium plan any day.

What’s your take on Memonic? If you think this tool is useful, please lets us know your thoughts through a comment.
Of all the renowned games in the web world, Farmville stands out alone unveiling a forum of trendiness and ostentatiousness. Plenty of cheats of the game are available worldwide. So here we are, covering another 7 more extensions for the diligent Web workers. The list below may not be the most comprehensive, but it contains the list of extensions that we use everyday and find them useful for everyday use.

1. Meta Inspector

To view the meta tag of a webpage, the usual method is to view the source code of the page. Meta Inspector simplifies this process and allows you to view the meta tags of the webpage right within the page.

This extension is mainly aimed at web developers that need to verify the description tag of their site to follow the Webmasters’ Google Guidelines, but can also be used by those who like to spy on their competitor’s sites. Not only does it allows you to view the meta tag in the header, it also allows you to view the no-follow, do-follow links in the page.

2. Google Reader Checker

If you rely on Google Reader to keep you updated on what’s happening in the Web, then this extension is going to be very useful to you. Google Reader Checker checks your Google Reader regularly and notifies you whenever there is a new feed update.

3. Resolution Test

Do you know how your website look like at different screen resolution? You can do it by changing the screen resolution manually, but this extension just makes thing easier. Simply click the icon and select the resolution that you want it to show. Your browser will automatically resize (best performed when it is not maximized) to the requested resolution size.

4. Speed Tracer

Speed Tracer helps you to find out what is slowing down your site. It analyzes your website for items such as Javascript parsing and execution, CSS style recalculation and selector matching, DOM Event handling, network resource loading and many more stuffs and show the result in graphs and numbers.

5. Chrome Bird

You can’t consider yourself a Web worker if you don’t have a Twitter account. Even though there are plenty of desktop Twitter clients that you can use, nothing beats a handy and useful extension that allow you to view the timeline and interact with your account instantly.

6. Google Translation Bar

Let’s say you blog in your native non-English language and you want to know how your articles turn out in English (or any other languages), this extension can immediately translate your site on the fly.

7. Stumble Upon

StumbleUpon is one of the best services that we use to research for materials. It used to be available only for Firefox, but now it is available in Google Chrome as well. Unlike the StumbleUpon extension in Firefox, this Chrome extension loads the StumbleUpon Web toolbar instead. Don’t worry, you will still get the exact browsing experience.

What other extensions have I left out?

While on a project, where money was scarce, we were scrambling around looking for a free or open source HTML editor that can provide us the same functionality as Adobe Dreamweaver. During my analysis of the different HTML editor out there, I came across Amaya. What intrigued me about it was that it was created by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C). As someone who loves Dreamweaver, I thought that I would never find something comparable to it that was free (open source), but I was wrong.

Amaya is an open-source HTML editor created by the W3C. If you don’t already know, W3C is an international community that develops Web standards. It was founded by Tim Berners-Lee, who is credited as inventing the World Wide Web. In 1998, Amaya was invented. Since then, there have been various releases that have given more functionality to Amaya.

Amaya is the most user-friendly HTML editor that I have come across. One of its features that is very similar to Dreamweaver is that you are able to split the screen to view the visual editor and the HTML code. In this way, you are able to code while seeing the changes, or you can do the other way around. It’s a great way to learn HTML, if you don’t know already. On the sidebar, you are able to easily modify the HTML, like in Adobe Dreamweaver. Different profiles can change the way they see the sidebar displayed.

Another great feature is the CSS functionality. With the press of a button, you are able to create a CSS stylesheet. You do not have to know CSS in order to create one, which is great for people trying to learn CSS and/or if you are trying to design a stylesheet quickly. This is a great way to have your site’s formatting and style be in a different file than the HTML code. It provides a way to add flexibilty to your web site/blog. It also has a debugger to check your code for errors.

One good thing about Amaya is that it allows five different user editing profiles, so if someone wants to change the behavior of the Amaya tool, he/she can have his/her own profile that is different from someone else. In addition, Amaya runs on Linux, Mac, and/or PC, so regardless which OS you are using, you will be able to use Amaya for your coding project.

What’s can be improved on?

Amaya is a quick and neat HTMl editor. I couldn’t find any issues, except that it needs to keep up with the new technologies. For instance, it isn’t made to build smartphones apps, which I saw in other free HTML editors. It also doesn’t support Ajax, which is being used more and more.

When it comes to features, Amaya is definitely not on par with Dreamweaver, but if you are looking for a free, simple, and useful HTML editor, then Amaya is a good candidate.

Have you use Amaya before? Tell us what you like/dislike about it.

The folks at Seesmic have been busy little beavers recently. Not only did they put out an upgraded for the desktop application I reviewed, they debuted Seesmic for the web. The release is being calling it a preview, which I’m guessing is a lot like a beta. The web application offers a lot of the same functionality available in the in the desktop app, but gives you the ability to access it from any web browser.

Web Preview

While the web version of Seesmic is currently limited in comparison to the desktop app, it is very usable and very cool. This preview release has all the basics with a few of the extras similar to the new features in the desktop app 0.4 upgrade. I am sure if they update the site with as much frequency as the desktop, it will have more features than you can shake a stick at in no time.

Features

When you hover over the profile picture, you are given three options: unfollow, message, or profile.

Click on the picture and it opens a pop up style window showing the profile info and a large picture.

The columns can be dragged and rearranged into any order for ease of viewing.

When you see a person @mentioned in a tweet who you are not currently following, simply click on their name to display a large profile pop up. In the pop up you can see all the basic info such as: their bio, how many people following them and how many people they follow. In another tab you can see some of their most recent updates.

The search bar does just what you would expect it to do. Type in a search term and finds tweets with those words in them. The results are displayed in a new column. These searches can also be saved for later if the column needs to be closed. The saved searches can also be accessed when you go to Twitter’s site.

You have a choice between a single column feed or multiple windows. A feature that I found appealing, is when you change the view to single column mode, the profile pictures are removed profile pics. This makes it a bit easier so scan through the updates by creating a more list like feed, similar to an RSS feed reader. Depending on the view chosen, the columns also auto size to fill the area.

Desktop Update

In the 0.4 updated desktop application, several new features were added. The two I am happiest about are the collapsible sidebar and the previously mentioned single column mode. The reason being, there isn’t always a need to see multiple accounts and every little update. In some cases I am going through tweets from a search. I am not going to reply to a DM for a little bit, so there isn’t a need for the added distraction.

A short list of the feature upgrades are:

* The option to set how many updates are in your timeline
* Single column and multiple column view
* A collapsible sidebar
* A fixed width column setting with user adjustable width.
* Miscellaneous fixes for better performance.

I am very excited to see what becomes of web based Seesmic, the preview shows a lot of promise. There are features I (and I’m sure many others) have grown accustomed to in the desktop app. Features much like being able to log into multiple accounts, accessing Facebook updates, user lists and quick access to favorite tweets. But, if nothing else, having the web and desktop versions be able to sync would be fantastic.

What would you like to see in the future updates of Seesmic web?

It’s a competitive world out there, and in the world of web browsers the phrase would be “extermely competitive”. Remember the good ol’ days of browser war back in the 90s? While there’s no more IE in the Mac universe, the competition is still very stiff. The not-so-famous names try so hard to get their brands out to the masses.

Most Mac users I know use either Safari or Firefox. But there are other good browsers out there that deserve a decent attention. Even though at the end you’ll get back to your old love, there’s nothing wrong on giving these alternative a try.

Mac-Only Browser

1. OmniWeb

OmniWeb is a veteran which need no further introduction. OmniWeb used to be a paid app and has been the alternative browser for Mac for so long that it has its own “cult” follower. Now that it’s available for free, there’s no other reason why you can’t try it.

2. Shiira

Shiira is the result of a (bit idealistic) project from Japanese developer to create a browser that is better and more useful than Safari. That’s why it’s based on Web Kit and written in Cocoa. So whether the project’s goal is reached or not, is for you – the users – to decide.

3. Camino

Camino is an open source web browser developed by Mozilla Project with a focus on providing the best possible experience for Mac OS X users. So if you want Firefox which built specifically for Mac, this is the one.

4. Stainless

Stainless used to be the ‘twisted’ Mac version of Google Chrome. But in the development, Stainless grows to become a unique browser with its own unique features, such as: parallel sessions, which allow users to log into a site using different credentials in separate tabs at the same time. (I’ve tried this with GMail but failed).

5. Sunrise

Sunrise is another Japanese Mac browser project based on Webkit. It has some unique features like visual bookmark and the ability to take snapshot of an entire web page. Another tiny useful feature is the ability to visually watch the loading progress of a page which is missing from Safari 4.

Not Mac-Only Browser

6. Opera

Opera is an ‘old’ browser who survive the browser war. The company which creates Opera is also one of the pioneers on development of ‘great’ mobile browser. The Mac version of Opera is also a good and stable alternative browser, but the existence of Safari and Firefox (and some people said also the un-Mac look of Opera) makes this oldies has to struggle to get more attention.

7. Flock

Flock is a browser which dubbed itself as the “social browser” and equipped itself with many social-ish features from blogging to facebook-ing and flickr-ing. The easy-WYSIWYG blog editor itself makes Flock worth the look.

8. Chrome

Chrome needs no further explanation. This Google’s browser is predicted to be one of the strong names in the future. At this moment, there’s no stable Mac version released to the public yet, but the alpha tester reported that we can expect good things to come.

After having used WebNotes for a while, I’m very impressed. With a name like WebNotes this web applications function is a bit of a self explanatory one. However, even though this application has a simple name, and behind that name it has simple functions, I will elaborate a bit on its features and uses. WebNotes is a web application that you can use in Mozilla Firefox and Internet Explorer browsers.

WebNotes Is:

A web application that allows you make live sticky notes with your preferred annotated text on the side. You’re able to highlight any set of text on any webpage and then simply share your notes with anyone you’d like to via email or link sharing. I’m glad that the creators of WebNotes thought of this idea, because now anyone on the web is able to properly save and index their notes with a few taps on the mouse. You can throw out the all-outdated copy and paste format imprisoning you to use Ctrl C and V every 5 seconds or so.

How to Utilize WebNotes:

WebNotes is really marketed and aimed at people that conduct a lot of research on the Web. Its uses don’t have to be restricted to professional or student use, it can be utilized by anyone with a PC. With this application you can easily annotate, organize, and share your notes, comments, or web content. All you have to do is install the WebNotes toolbar that contains all the necessary tools. Once the tool bar has been installed then you’re set to start annotating the web.

You can highlight any set of text and later view it in your WebNotes account. The notes you take and highlight will always be archived in you’re my WebNotes area and they will be accompanied by the specific URL where you took the notes from.

Example:

Highlight any part of any text within a site.

Later quickly view all of your notes in you’re my WebNotes section.

When you’ve finished highlighting the text and notes you desire, you can click on the Share this page button, and this will allow you to send your notes via email or direct link to the persons of your choice.

The End of Our WebNotes Journey:

From what I’ve gathered WebNotes is an easy and simple to use web application that allows the facilitation of jotting down quick notes that can be saved and viewed later. This gives you the ability to organize your work properly while making your life on the web a bit easier all together.

One thing I wasn’t able to come to very good terms with was the installation of the tool bar, although easy enough as it is to install it, you don’t always want to have to install a complete tool bar on top of the Google or Yahoo tool bar already installed within my browser. Maybe WebNotes could possibly develop a much more appealing tool bar with the use of Flash that pops up when you click a small button located somewhere on your screen.

Invites

With all of this being said, I have around 10 WebNotes Beta invites. If you want to get one, shout it out in the comments, along with your email address.
