TagMyDoc is one web service that does exactly this. It embeds QR code onto your documents. During a keynote presentation, meeting, discussion or video conference, your friends/colleagues/co-workers can scan the QR code in the document and have the document downloaded to their devices instantly.

The usage is simple. You just have to visit TagMyDoc.com, upload a file and it return a QR code immediately. You don’t even have to sign up for an account to use it.

Download the file, open it and you will see the document tagged with a QR code.

If you decide to sign up for a TagMyDoc account, you will be able to track your documents and sort them into various folders. More importantly, you are able to choose the position where the QR code is embedded and add a password to protect the download.

The premium version ($2.99 per month) even allows you to tag a folder, upload multiple files at once and versioning system for your documents. If you have tons of documents that you need to share and handle every month, $2.99 is actually a great deal for all those conveniences.

At this moment, the service is still in beta and it is still lacking in features. Under the Downloads section, you can see that a plugin for Microsoft Words and PowerPoint is coming so you can tag the document directly within the Office suite. Mobile application for iOS, Android and Blackberry is on the way too.

One thing that I hope it can implement is the ability to sync the documents with my desktop (just like Dropbox) so I won’t have to upload the files/documents every time I make changes to it.

There are many reasons why you want to download your photo from Facebook:

• You want to keep a copy of your tagged photos.
• You don’t have access to Facebook all the times
• You never know when Facebook will disappear, and bring along your precious photos with them

While there are plenty of applications out there that allow you to download Facebook photos, most of them are not cross-platform compatible and require you to perform an installation. If you are looking for a good handy FB photo downloader that works in all platform and doesn’t require installation, then Pick&Zip is the one you are looking for.

Pick&ZIp is a Web app that exists for only one purpose – to allow you to download your FB photos. The usage is simple.

First, on the Pick&Zip main page, login to your Facebook account (You will need to enable flash to view the main page).

It will then request for your permission to access your profile. Click Allow.

Once you have given it permission, it will scan your profile and list down your friends list on the left pane. You can click on your friend’s name to view their photos.

To view your pictures, click on the find my pictures button. Your photos will be loaded on the right pane.

You can then select the photos that you want to download, or simply click the “Select All” button to select all photos. Once this is done, click the Review & Download button.

You can then review the photos that you have selected and choose to download it on a zip or pdf format.

Personally, I prefer to download the zip format rather than the pdf. The pdf file will crop all your photos in order to fit them in a page width. I much prefer to have the original photos so I can manage it with my Photos Manager.

Lastly, for security and privacy purpose, after downloading your photos, if you have no more use for the application, I would advise you to go to your Facebook Application settings and remove the PicknZip from your list of added applications.

Conclusion

As mentioned above, PicknZip only exists for one purpose – to allow you to download Facebook photos, and it has done its jobs well. While it doesn’t comes with plenty of features, the fact that it doesn’t require any installation and it is dead simple to use make it worthwhile to checkout. What do you think?

The question is, how would you utilize the time? One of the possibilities is filling the boring commuting hours by watching movies or catching up with your favorite TV series on your portable multimedia player. Thanks to the gigantic capacity of storage available today, we can practically bring tons of movies inside our pocket. The classic white iPod is my wife’s best companion on the road, while I can go along just fine with my small screen smart phone.

The Cows That Tidies Up The Messy Movie Tags

Problem is, not all movie files are created the same way. Because there are many resources that you can use to get your movies; such as buying them from online store, downloading them using torrent, or ripping them from CDs/DVDs; you will also get many different tagging systems.

Most of the time, we’ll come across files that look like this: “tvamdi_113.tv-lol”. Unless you are a psychic, it’s difficult to guess what’s inside. Imagine having to go through those gibberish on the small screen every time we want to find a movie to watch. Life would be so much easier if all the movies are properly tagged.

We’ve discussed the topic of tidying song tags using Tagr, and similar process could also be applied to movies using an app called MetaX. This free app is available for Windows and Mac, and it will help you tidy the tags in a snap. Literary.

The first time of running MetaX, the app will give you several confirmation windows. Starting from the familiar checking for updates question, continued to the question of whether or not you want to search for tag data automatically, the offer of Enabling integration with tagChimp.com, and reminder about the importance of making backups of your data.

Then you’ll have the main window of MetaX before your very eyes.

Going Through The Preferences

As always, it’s good to start “messing around” with any app from the Preferences (Command + Comma). The first one is “General Preferences” where you can modify the general settings.

The “File Level Preferences” deals with type of incoming files and their name tagging.

The “Data Preferences” gives you options of sources to get the data. There’s an option to get and share data with tagChimp.

While you’re not required to have tagChimp account to get data from the service, you need an account to be able to share. If you want to do so, just register yourself for an account in their website.

The last one is “iTunes Preferences” and it is fairly simple.

Start The Tagging Process

To give tags to a movie, you have to open it in MetaX. If you choose to get prompted in the “File Level Preferences“, a confirmation window will pop up asking you what kind of movie that you open.

Then the opened movie will sit on the “Search” pane while MetaX doing the data searching. Most of the time, you will get the results within seconds.

Just browse through the choices and pick the best result.

The related tags of the selected result will be presented in the middle pane.

If the everything is satisfying, double click the selected result in the search pane and the tags will be locked to the file. Locked tags have checkmark on the box next to it.

You can also add and/or edit the tags manually. And if you don’t want your manual tags modified by the search result, just lock the tag.

You can modify more data about the movie by going to the “Video” tab.

Unless you want to be very detailed about the tags, you don’t need to mess with other tabs.

You can add more movies, and the list will be presented in the “Queue” pane on the right.

Repeat the process for other files in the queue, and if everything is set, you can click the “Wirte & Share” button at the toolbar. If you choose “Send to iTunes after writing” in the “iTunes Preferences“, your tagged movies will appear in iTunes, ready to be transported to your iPod.

Please note that MetaX only works with MP4 movies. That’s why it’s a perfect tool to tag movies for your portable multimedia player since MP4 is the accepted format among such devices. Use Handbrake to convert other movie formats to this mobile-friendly format

1. Windows search is always very generalized – either you get a lot of results or nothing at all. In some cases, it takes some time to hunt down the exact file which you are searching for.

2. Windows search is slow and if you have disabled indexing of files and folders, it’s even slower.

3. Windows search is of no use when you do not remember the name of the file in question.

Example: Let’s say you are searching for a picture you took during one of your vacation trips. The file name can be something like img00234.jpg and it’s impossible to remember the name after some time. When you try to search the image using the Windows search box, you feel helpless because you do not remember the file name.

Why you should Assign Tags to Files in Windows?

That’s when you need the concept of “Tags”. Tags help you club similar things together and associate a familiar name with anything you want. Suppose you have the following four things kept at different places in your hard drive:

1. An image of Microsoft logo.

2. Microsoft office software setup file.

3. A PDF about Microsoft and Bill gates.

4. A text document containing a list of all employees who work at Microsoft.

Now, when you associate all of these items with the “microsoft” tag, they can be found quite easily. You may not remember the file name of the PDF or text document but you will surely remember that it’s about Microsoft. Hence you can easily find out that particular file using intelligent tagging built in Windows by default.

How to Assign Tags to Files in Windows

Before you can use the Tags for searching files quickly, let’s learn how you can tag files in Windows. Following are the steps involved:

1. Right click a file and open the properties window. Navigate to the “Details” tab as shown below:

2. You will see a “Tags” text box where you can enter one or more tags for that file. In addition to the tags, you can also add ratings, comments, subject and title to that file. However, these fields are not required for performing searches.

3. You do not have to memorize all the names of tags. When you want to assign a tag that is already created, Windows shows you tag suggestions as you type in the Tag text box.

It’s not possible to tag each and every file in your hard drive, however it’s recommended to tag the important ones so that they appear in the search results.

How to Search for the Tagged Files

Let’s assume you have tagged two files with the tag “baby” and you do not remember the file name or the location of any of these files. To search those files, just type the tag name in Windows search box and you will instantly see those files in the search result pane as shown below:

To open a file, all you have to do is click the link from the search result pane. Now isn’t that a cool and easy trick to search similar files in Windows whose file name you do not remember?

On the other side, the convenience of digital music raises another problem: digital file management. Take a peek into your music collection, how many files have their names and information right? Maybe it’s far less than a half. If your collection consists of less than a hundred MP3s, the process of tidying up the wrong names would be a breeze. But everybody I know has thousands of tunes in their library.

Tidying Up With Tagr

Luckily, the “organizing MP3 collection” process could be simplified with the help of a free app called Tagr. This little app (only about 2.3 Mb) claims to be able to edit information such as a song’s artist, title, or album cover. Tagr also allows you to control the way your files are named. Tagr also features integration with discogs.com that allows you to search for album information and artwork and apply it to your songs.

To use Tagr, users simply drag and drop their MP3s into the Tagr windows to be edited. Dropping down an entire album is possible (and advisable), so the user can add or edit the information in a bulk. Just select all MP3 files and user can tinker with the attributes.

There are sets of editing menu available:
- Numbering: to edit the tracks numbers. Users can choose to have a leading zeros before the track numbers (01, 02, 03, and so on) and the track counts behind the track numbers (01/18, 02/18, 03/18, and so on).

- File Naming: Users can edit the original file name to include either: Artist and Title, Track and Title, or Track, Artist and Title.

- Capitalization: Users can choose to change the track names into: Title Case, UPPERCASE, or lowercase.

- All In One: do all the above at once to all the file selected.

As an addition, users can add attributes such as Artist, Album, Genre, Year, Comment and album art to the selected files. These attributes will be part of the file, and users should not be afraid that they would be lost – even if the files are moved to another computer.

Just be sure to hit the “Save to Disk” icon after you change the MP3s information.

The Minus Side

IMHO, here are the few things where Tagr could be improved:
- I tried to drag and drop songs from iTunes and failed. Maybe the future version of Tagr could support this. iTunes might be a superior player, but it still has some limitation such as adding album art. It would be nice if we could do it easily with the help of Tagr.
- To retrieve songs’ information and art from the Discogs.com to be applied to the songs, users have to go to coverflow menu. This additional step is not described clearly and lazy users could get frustrated trying to locate it. Maybe adding a search box and a right click menu to access this feature would greatly appreciated by the users.

So, in conclusion, Tagr is a nice little helper in managing names and tags of MP3 files, but it could be improved.

- sometimes they use extremely crazy name such as “ad724bcb-0e34-b538-b712-1e4cc553c114.flv” or “ix5rba2UjXQ.mp4″ (They are real names, I didn’t make them up).

- sometimes they are saved not with the date they were downloaded but with the date they were created.

- sometimes they are saved in the unknown location.

Now, here’s the reasons: the files becoming difficult to find. I can’t use “Find” because I don’t know the name, I can’t use sorting by date because the possibilities are endless, and I can’t do manual search either because the location is unknown. Then after a while, they are totally forgotten.

Then I find Fresh, a solution to that kind of problems and more, from the creator of Deep, YEP and Leap. I’ve been using it only for few minutes and already falling in love to it.

Fresh from the Fridge

This newborn small app (version 1.0.0, only 1.2 Mb in size) will show two main area across the screen.

The upper green box called “Fresh Files” contains icons of things that have been modified recently in our computer: downloaded files, documents, musics, images, videos, everything.

The lower tosca box called “The Cooler” is the place for users to put their files to keep them fresh. This would be the perfect place to put documents which constantly being worked on.

There will also be a small grey area on the right side of the screen where users can drag files to give tags. And tagging is one of the strong points of this app. Users can find files with tags easier.

There’s another way to tag. User can select one or multiple files from the Fresh main window and then push the Enter key on the keyboard.

Another great feature of Fresh is that users can easily attach files they are working on to mail by simply dragging and dropping the file(s) from Fresh windows to the mail.

Here’s the trick I found by accident: if you drag the file from Fresh windows to a text file, you will get the path where the file is located. Something like this: “/Users/name/Documents/Blah-blah-blah/Keep Your File List Fresh – Mac Only.rtf”

Love at first sight

I’ve mentioned earlier that I’ve fallen for this app from the first sight. The interface is beautiful and it solves my problem. But I kinda hate the app icon, though…

The developer – Ironic Software also provide users with very clear text and video tutorial on the web page, so new users can start in no time.

It’s worth mentioning that Fresh is not a free app, it’ll cost you US$ 9 if you bought it from the developer. But it’s available for free for a limited time from MacHeist 3. All you have to do is to sign up and do the “nanoMission 2″.
