Have you ever wanted to change the item listed in the context menu in Firefox and find that there are no ways for you to change it in the Preferences section? The Firefox browser comes with a list of preset items for your context menu and is supposed to be the most useful options during browsing. Since we all have different browsing habit, won’t it be great if we can rearrange the items in the context menu and add/remove items to enhance our efficiency?

Firefox does not comes with such option for you to change the context menu, so we have to rely on the menu editor extension to get the thing. With this extension, you can now edit your context menu (and any other menus), rearrange the options, hide the unnecessary and even add entry from other menus.

Installation

Install the menu editor addon from here. Alternatively, you can search for it in the Firefox Addon section.

Note: If you have problem getting it to work because of incompatible Firefox version, you may want to install the Compatibility Reporter first before install the Menu Editor addon.

After the installation, go to the option page for menu editor (you can find at the “Menu Editor -> Preferences” at the Addon section).

Usage

There are two modes: Simple and Advanced.

The simple mode allows you to rearrange the item and/or hide the unnecessary one.

First, choose the menu that you want to edit. The default is the context menu.

To rearrange, simply drag and drop the items to the order you want. That’s it

To hide it, simply uncheck the tick under the visible field. You will now see a “X”.

In the Advanced mode, you can add items from other menus.

For example, to add the “New window” option to the context menu, go to the Advanced mode. On the left pane, make sure the context menu option is selected. On the right pane, select the File menu. Next, drag the “New Window” entry from the right pane to the left.

That’s it.

If you have been a detailed person, you will notice that the all the icons are missing from the System menu. Look for the screenshot below for illustration.

This is not really a big deal, but if you are the kind easily frustrated over any form of imperfection, here’s the fix:

Open up a terminal and type:

gconftool-2 –type Boolean –set /desktop/gnome/interface/menus_have_icons True

Tata…your System icons magically appear in the menu.

Adding some extra features in the right click menu is a good practice to ease your work and save the time. You can add several items like Command prompt, Copy the contents to clipboard, CopyTo, MoveTo in your right click context menu in Windows7. These additions obviously will benefit you by saving your time. Let’s discuss about the methods one by one. All the methods described in this article are based on registry editing. So back up your registry before editing and keep yourself on the safe side.

Add “Open Command Prompt in This Folder” option

When you work in Command Prompt, many time you need to change the directory and generally you use the command “cd directory path”. If the file is in the deep of your hard disk then repeating the task to change any directory is quite boring. You can add an entry in the right click menu by which you can open the command prompt directly in the folder, just right clicking on it. Here is the simple registry tweak.

Press Windows key + R. Type “regedit” to open the registry.

Navigate to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shell in the registry editor.

Create a new key under “shell” and name it “Command Prompt”.

In the right pane modify the value of “Default” by right clicking on it and then “Modify“. In the “Value data” field write “Command Prompt here”.

Similarly create another new key under the key “Command Prompt’ and name it as “command“.

Select the new key you’ve just created and modify “Default” similarly and put the following code in the “Value data” field.

cmd.exe /k cd %1

Add “Copy the content to clipboard” option

Suppose you want to copy the whole text of the notepad document and paste it in MS Word document. So you will have to open the notepad file and then select all the text and then copy. But all the jobs can be done by just right clicking on the notepad file and and selecting the “Copy to clip” item.

Navigate to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\txtfile\shell in the registry editor.

Create a new key under shell and name it “Copy to clip”, following the same procedure as the previous case. In the right pane modify the value of “Default” and you can give any thing meaningful that will appear in the right click menu, say “Copy the contents to clipboard”.

Again create another new key under “Copy to clip” and name it “command“. Right click on “Default”, click on “Modify” and put the following code in “Value data” field

cmd /c clip < “%1”

Right click on any text file and choose “Copy the content to clipboard”. The content of the file is now copied in the clipboard.

Now you can paste the content in any application.

Right click on ContextMenuHandlers and choose “New->Key”.

Give the name of the key as “CopyTo”.

Double click on the value named as “Default” in the right side. Enter the following code including the braces in the “Value data” field.

{C2FBB630-2971-11D1-A18C-00C04FD75D13}

The CopyTo item will be added in the right click menu. Now right click on any file or folder and chose “CopyTo”. The following pop-up box will appear.

You can choose here the location where you want to copy the file or folder.

Add “SendTo” option

To add MoveTo item in the right click menu navigate to the same key as described above.

Create a new key in the similar way and give the name as “MoveTo”.

Similarly put the following code in the “Value data” field.

{C2FBB631-2971-11D1-A18C-00C04FD75D13}

See that the MoveTo item has been added to the right click menu.

All the procedures described in this article works for Windows 7, Vista as well as Windows XP.

Enjoy!

Many KDE 3 users swear by the K menu and would dare anyone to challenge it with something better. Fortunately for those people, KDE 4 retained that menu version as an option. For the rest of us, there are a couple of more robust menus that offer a variety of features. Lancelot is a third-party menu that has now entered into the KDE fold. It is the one I use, and many others have found it pretty useful. In this post, I will present to you some of Lancelot’s features so that you can decide if it is right for you.

Setup

Lancelot is now part of KDE and should be available for installation in any KDE-based distribution (or distributions with the option for full KDE installation). To enable it:

1. Right click on the desktop or panel and click “Unlock Widgets”.
2. Right click on your current menu and click “Remove…”
3. Right click on the desktop and click “Add Widgets”.
4. Drag the Lancelot widget onto the panel.

You will see another widget called “Lancelot Part”, but leave that one alone for now. Like most panel widgets, you can configure it by right-clicking on the icon and clicking “Lancelot Launcher Settings”. “Show categories…” will display a button for each Lancelot category. “Show only menu launcher icon” does just what it says.

One unique feature of Lancelot is the “No-click activation”, which allows you to navigate through the menu without clicking the mouse button. It is in the settings under “Menu” and the “General” tab. To activate an item, move your mouse pointer over the little arrow that appears when you highlight it. In my case, there is apparently something about clicking that feels more manly, so I disabled the “No-click”.

Categories

There are four Lancelot categories: Applications, Computer, Contacts, and Documents. In “Applications”, you can add your favorite menu items to the favorites column simply by right-clicking on the icon and clicking “Add to Favorites”. When you navigate through each column, Lancelot stays there even if you close the menu, which is handy if you intend to open several applications within that section. It also produces a breadcrumb trail at the top so that you can track back to any spot.

“Computer” will show you the standard “Places” items that you have setup in Dolphin, “System” items, which you can edit, and a list of removable and fixed drives. “Contacts” displays new email messages (through Kmail and Kontact) and online Kopete contacts. “Documents” shows your most recent documents in various formats. Early versions of Lancelot did not allow the user to clear the “recent documents”, but that feature has now been added.

Lancelot Part

I had a very good reason for telling you to leave the Lancelot Part alone. If you were to drag it from the “Add Widgets” dialog, you would find that it does nothing. Any section within a Lancelot category can become a widget, utilizing Lancelot Part. For example, make sure that your widgets are unlocked, and then try dragging the “Places” section from the “Computer” category onto an open area of your desktop. You will now have a handy shortcut menu for all of your bookmarked places.

You can do the same with any of the Lancelot categories. You can also add multiple sections to one Lancelot Part. Just drag a second section onto the current one you just made. It is resizeable and has some configuration settings. In addition, any folder can be made into a Lancelot Part simply by dragging it to the desktop.

Lancelot Search

Lancelot is integrated with Krunner. That means anything the user can search for in Krunner can also be found in Lancelot. That includes applications, nepomuk tags, indexed documents, contacts, bookmarks, and file folders. It will also perform numerous Krunner functions such as the calculator and unit convertor.

Lancelot works very well for those users who like a lot of functionality, and it delievers on its promises. If you are the type who prefers simplicity, however, Lancelot is not for you. The myriad of categories and menu columns can be daunting. Furthermore, I have noticed a slight delay in opening the menu on slower machines, so those of you on netbooks and low-powered desktops will probably prefer a more minimal menu. On my desktop, I enjoy Lancelot in its full glory, and it integrates nicely with KDE’s “Air” Plasma theme. I recommend you give it a try.
