As much as you want to use some of your iPhone apps with your iPad, you can’t because of compatibility issues. The most common problem you may encounter when doing so is pixelation; the other one is size doubling. Obviously, it is because iPhone and iPad have different screen size.

There is a workaround I knew in making some iPhone apps iPad-compatible, however, you must remember that not all apps may run correctly with this method. I have used Fugu for several months with this purpose and I never encountered any problem.

Fugu Overview

Basically, Fugu is the graphical representation of Secure File Transfer Protocol (SFTP) command line. SFTP works like File Transfer Protocol (FTP) only that the entire session is encrypted and it is impossible for third party to intercept that data being sent (especially password) because all of which do not have clear-text format. For more information about Fugu, you may visit its official website.

Pre-Requisites

- before you can do this tutorial, you should jailbreak your iPad.

- install OpenSSH through Cydia.

- download Fugu here.

Here’s the Workaround…

Actually, this tutorial is pretty simple and straightforward that you wouldn’t even find it difficult. However, if you are new to using iPhone or iPad, there’ll may be things you would find difficult to understand.

Step One: Make sure you connect your iPad to the same network where your computer is connected; launch Fugu if everything is set and ready.

Step Two: You will then be asked to enter information to the fields provided. For the Connect To field, enter your iPad’s IP address; for Username, enter the default which is root. You may click on ‘Connect‘ button to continue.

Step Three: You will be prompted for the password. If you haven’t changed the default password yet, you can use alpine, then click ‘Authenticate‘ to proceed.

Step Four: Now, we will go to applications folder. Click on ‘Go To‘ button at the top. Then key in /var/mobile/Applications, but make sure that ‘Remotely‘ option is selected before you click on the ‘Go‘ button. This will bring us to the directory where application files are saved.

Step Five: A list of folders or directories will be presented to you with a bunch of numbers. Unfortunately, it would be difficult to determine the right app you are looking for since the directories are named NOT bearing their own names or brands. The best thing you can do is to know the ‘Date Modified’ of the application you are looking for.

Step Six: If you already knew the folder you are up to based on its modified date, just double-click on it to enter the directory. Once inside, you’ll notice there is another folder which bears the name of the app. In this example, we will use BeejiveIM app since it is one of the applications where this guide is applicable to. Enter into the app’s directory.

Step Seven: Look for info.plist and copy it to your computer, or you can just drag it from the right pane to the left.

Step Eight: Control-click or Right-click on file you just copied and select ‘Open‘ from the menu. Doing so will let Property List Editor open the file for editing. Now click on ‘Add Child‘ button from the toolbar; name the new child as UIDeviceFamily.

Step Nine: Now Right-click on UIDeviceFamily, select ‘Value Type‘ then ‘Array‘ from the menu.

Step Ten: There is a little arrow beside UIDeviceFamily (left side), just click on it to reveal child under it. After which, add two items by clicking ‘Add Child‘ twice, this will add items 0 and 1, and set the values 1 and 2, respectively.

Step Eleven: After doing the above step, just ‘Save‘ it normally. Now, you are ready to overwrite info.plist using Fugu.

Basically, you can do the steps 8 to 10 without copying info.plist to your computer for editing. However, to make it safer for your app, it would be better to back the data up before editing; doing so will make it easier for you to retract all the changes you’ve should anything crazy happen.

Now, you can just respring your iPad or reboot it. The next time you’ll launch that specific iPhone app (for this post it’s BeejiveIM) through your iPad, it should work. Don’t hesitate to leave questions or comment if you have any.

Sometimes, it can be very annoying to get an older program to run in Windows 7 or Vista. These programs are often not compatible with your current installation of Windows, and yet they are essential for your daily usage. So what can you do about it? Luckily, there is this Program Compatibility Wizard in Windows 7/Vista that can make things slightly easier. What the wizard does is to make the Operating System behaves like an earlier version of Windows so older programs can run on it smoothly.

Here are the steps to make older programs run in Windows 7/Vista.

Open Control Panel from the start menu of Windows 7/Vista.

Click on “Programs” from the right pane.

Now you can see “Programs and features”. Under this header, click on “Use an older program with this version of windows“.

The program compatibility wizard will appear with a caution message.

Click “Next” to continue.

For Windows Vista

Now 3 options will appear. You can run program compatibility wizard for those programs that are already installed but not running properly by choosing the the option”I want to choose from a list of programs“. There is another option that allows you to choose the location of the setup file of the application which you are going to install in Vista.

After choosing the appropriate option, you have to select the operating system in which the program is compatible. Here I have chosen Windows XP service pack 2.

The next window allows you to change the display settings for the application. This is only necessary if you experienced any problem with the display.

If your programs need the administrator privilege to run, check the box Run program as administrator and click “Next“.

Windows will now check if the program compatibility settings work fine for the older program. Once it is done, it will show a UAC security prompt. Click “Allow“

If it finds any compatibility issue, it will show an error message.

If everything is fine, go back to the compatibility wizard page and choose “Yes, set this program to always use these compatibility settings“. Click “Next” and then “Finish“.

For Windows 7

It will list all the installed programs.

Pick the incompatible program from the list. If you have not installed (or can’t install) the program, you can choose “Not listed” to select the setup file of the program.

Now two options will appear. The first is for testing with the recommended settings and the second one is for customizing the settings. If you are having problems with the display and user permissions, choose the second option.

If you choose the recommended compatibility settings, the system will find the suitable settings for the program. If you have chosen the second option, you will see a window where you can configure the display and user permission issue.

Click on “Start the program“.

Once it is done, go back to the program compatibility wizard and click on “Next“.

Choose “Yes, save this settings for this program“.

You can also set the compatibility mode by right clicking on the executable file.

Right click on the executable file and choose Properties.

Select the Compatibility tab.

Check the “Run this program in compatibility mode for:” option.

Make the necessary configuration and click OK.

You will have a better chance of running the older programs in Windows 7 than on Vista. However, it still doesn’t guarantee to work for all software. You might want to contact your software vendor to see if a newer release of the software is available.

Windows Vista and 7 come with User Account Control (UAC) that controls the permissions the users have for running each application. Due to this restriction, many program in Win XP that require administrators privilege will not be able to run smoothly in Vista or Win 7. In such cases, you can use the VistaUACMaker to change the permission in the application and make it compatible with Vista and Windows 7.

To achieve the goal that we have in mind, we need to alter the Manifest File of the app which contains the useful information that provides the privileges needed by the app concerned & its UI Interaction of the app.

Those are the three types of privileges that can be stored in the Manifest File.

requireAdministrator – Run the app as administrator.

asInvoker – Run with same privilege as that of the parent process.

highestAvailable – Run with highest possible privilege available to user.

Ok that is enough with the geeky talk, let us proceed to the HOW TO section which tells us how to perform the task.

1. Download Vista UAC Maker.

2. Run the Utility. Now using the Select… button browse & locate the app or program executable file.

3. Add some words in the Project Description field for future reference.

4. In the Required Privilege Level drop-down list select the privilege. The default is [requireAdministrator], but you can change it to whichever is suitable for the application.

5. In the last step where you are asked “Does your application interacts with high privilege windows on desktop?”, check the Yes box only if your app interacts with high privilege apps on UI level in Vista else leave it as No.

That’s it.

Now the configured app is compatible with Windows Vista as well as Windows 7 too. This works great in cases where you need to use a particular app meant for XP to be sound & working in Vista & Windows 7. Hope that helps. Share your experiences by putting in your valuable comments.
