Absolutely - I did not intend to debase your article, which was very informative. I suppose my comment was a bit off-topic, in that you were focusing on the user-end features of the system, and I was investigating the underlying protocols (so I guess I'm one of those "networking geeks").

They do claim everything you report. I was just curious about how they define and achieve security, privacy, and anonymity.

My statement regarding anonymity is based on info from the OneSwarm website, such as:

its friend-to-friend data sharing features are built on cryptographic standards, e.g., X.509 certificates and SSL encryption.

Thank you for this writeup. I am always interested in new P2P protocols.

OneSwarm may be private in the sense that you must be invited in, but its use of email, GTalk, and a central server do not provide much privacy, security, or anonymity. The biggest change from standard BitTorrent operation is that data flows over the network (not directly peer-to-peer).

I have not yet read their papers, but this appears to only provide a thin veil of anonymity (IP address only known to so-called "friends"), and no inherent data security. Contrast this with TOR and Freenet, both of which provide fully distributed protocols (no "community server") that focus on cryptographically measurable security, privacy, and anonymity.
