Let’s start with the system that has allowed many of our home games for the first time, the Nintendo Entertainment System. NES emulators are often easier to find, install and run. In my search for quality NES emulators for Linux, I found GFCEU be my favorite.

Alternatively, for those that feel uneasy about the legality of emulators, visit http://www.virtualnes.com.
They’ve done a great job of covering the legal areas and creating an on-the-fly NES emulator with a massive game list.

Although not a Console, but a handheld, I think the GBA emulator “Visualboy Advance” deserves to be mentioned, it’s in the offical ubuntu repositories and works like a charm.

The packages are: “visualboyadvance” and “visualboyadvance-gtk”
