I use this on my eeepc 701 4G. I think it is excellent. I have previously used Ubuntu Netbook Remix which I think is very good, but for me KDE is better. It has a more intelligent interface which fits the small screen better and generally feels much more integrated. KDE4 is beginning to show its quality.

When I first read "designed for netbooks" I was hoping you were going to say they worked on reducing the cpu and memory footprint of kde4. I like the kde4 features, but with Mandriva 2009.1 on a 1.8Ghz Athlon XP it idles at 25-30% cpu. Perhaps not all of that is kde's fault. By far the worst culprit is pulseaudio, which idles at 15% (no sound apps running at all). It was worse before I deleted nspluginviewer, which Konq loads and runs continuously for every browser process, even if it's not needed (and even if load on demand only is selected). Korgac also chews up 9%. I've been forced to move to lxde just to have a usable gui (one that doesn't take multiple seconds for desktop switches, popups and previews).

[...] KDE Plasma Netbook Preview With the growing popularity of netbooks, it is no surprise that many Linux distributions and software developers have created customized versions of their software to run on them. Some of the popular choices include Ubuntu’s Netbook Remix and Intel’s Moblin. Not to be counted out, KDE now has a version of their desktop environment designed for netbooks. While it is still under heavy development, I thought now would be a good time to get a little preview of what is to come. For the purposes of this preview, I installed Kubuntu Netbook Edition, but you can conceivably use any distribution that will support your netbook. [...]
