How to Jailbreak Your iPhone/iPod Touch Easily With QuickPwn

iphoneonhandThe iPhone-dev team has recently released a QuickPwn tool that enable users to jailbreak iPhone and iPod Touch without having to reformat the whole unit. If you have not jailbroken your iPhone/iPod Touch, thinking that it is a difficult process, here is where you can learn to jailbreak your unit the easy way.

The QuickPwn is available for both Windows and Mac platform. There is a difference though. The Windows version of QuickPwn supports any 2.0.x firmware while the latest Mac version only supports 2.0.2 firmware. If you are using a Mac, you will have to upgrade your unit to the latest 2.0.2 firmware before you can use the QuickPwn tool.

The following tutorial will teach you how to jailbreak your iPhone/iPod Touch on your Mac. The step for Windows will be the same.

Some points to note;

1) This tutorial is illustrated with an iPod Touch and assumed that you have already upgraded your firmware to 2.0.2.

2) If you have not, simply connect your iPhone/iPod Touch to your iTunes and select the ‘Download and Install’ option when it prompts you to upgrade your firmware. Make sure that your iTunes is of version 7.7 and above.

Step 1:

Download the QuickPwn for Mac from the iphone-dev site . This is a torrent file. So make sure you have a torrent client (such as Transmission) to download the program.

(The above link is only for Firmware 2.0.2. If you are using firmware 2.2 or later, check out the iphone-dev blog for the latest QuickPwn download link.)

Step 2:

Connect your iPhone/iPod Touch to your iTunes and perform a backup sync. Even though the jailbreaking process is relatively safe and shouldn’t break any data, it is still better to do a backup and safe guard your data. Sometimes, you just can’t trust technology.

Step 3:

Once you have sync with iTunes, quit iTunes completely. This will prevent iTunes from interfering the jailbreaking process. Unzip the QuickPwn_1.0.0.tbz using Archive Utility to a convenient folder (say your Desktop). Do not use any other decompressing application. You should see this red icon with a pineapple.

Step 4:

Double click QuickPwn to open it. A warning screen will appear. Once you are WARNED, click OK to continue.

Step 5:

QuickPwn will now attempt to identify your iPhone/iPod Touch unit. If you have not connected your iPhone/iPod Touch via the USB cable, do it now.

Step 6:

Once QuickPwn successfully identifies your unit, it will ask if you want to receive update on startup. There is no harm in doing so, but if you are uncomfortable with application running in the background, then choose No.

Step 7:

QuickPwn will now scan your Mac for the 2.0.2 firmware that you have downloaded and automatically build the jailbreak firmware. There is nothing for you to do in this step. Just let the application run on its own.

Step 8:

Once the custom firmware is built, you have to switch the iPhone/iPod Touch to DFU mode (aka Restore mode) so that QuickPwn can modify your unit’s firmware. Make sure you have closed your iTunes completely. Follow the onscreen instructions to set your unit to DFU mode. (This can be rather tricky. You might have to try a few times to get it to DFU mode)

First, turn off your device by pressing the Power button for 3 secs and slide the slider to the right to power it off.

Now, hold the power and home button together for 10 seconds.

Release the power button and continue to hold the home button for another 10 seconds.

Your iPhone/iPod Touch will now be in DFU mode. If it fail to reach DFU mode, unplug and reconnect your unit to your Mac and repeat the above procedure again.

Step 9:

QuickPwn will now send the modified firmware to your unit. There is nothing to do in this step except to wait.

Once it is done, it will show the reboot warning. At this moment, don’t touch anything on your iPhone/iPod Touch. Let it run and reboot itself. It will take around 3-5mins. Just be patient.

Your iPhone/iPod Touch should be jailbroken after the reboot. You should be able to see the Cydia and Installer apps on the home screen.

That’s it. Your iPhone/iPod Touch is now jailbroken.

  • eric
I have an ipod 3rd gen running 2.2.1
my problem is that when i open the software i get to step 9
but it doesnt recognize my ipod touch. any tips???
  • George
I tried running this software (windows) on my iPod touch 1st Gen running 2.2.1, and it worked fine, until the last part where it said to wait until the ipod completely reboots. I leave it for 10 mins, and its still stuck on that pineapple. 20 minutes later, It's still stuck on that. I tried holding home and power for 10 seconds then holding home for 10 seconds, but that accomplishes nothing. Now when I try to plug my ipod in to itunes, It won't let me restore, because it won't connect! Plz help!
  • Damien
This has happened to me before. What I did:
    1) disconnect the ipod touch from the computer
    2) press and hold the Power and Home button. I don't remember how long is it, but eventually it reboots itself.
    3) I repeat the steps above to re-jailbreak my iPod Touch.

    Hope this helps

I'm computer-stupid, can someone break down those terms for me? How do I know if I have a 2.02 firmware? Also, I clicked on the link (torrent file,) and when I press open, only frostwire shows up... ?

Can someone give me some details?
  • Damien
The firmware is the version of the software running in your iPhone. When you connect your iPhone to your iTunes, it will show the firmware on the screen.

To download the quickpwn, you need a bit-torrent client like Transmission or uTorrent. After you have installed the bit-torrent client, you can download the torrent file, pass it to the bit-torrent client and it will download the rest of the software. In your case, Frostwire is the default bit-torrent client in your computer, that's why when you click on the torrent file, it shows up.

After you jailbreak your itouch can u unjailbreak it by restoring to factory settings?

  • Amadou

I haven't tried yet, but in the name of everybody, I just wanted to thank you.
This people are ungreatfull, coz even then those who managed to make it work didnt even think of saying Thanks...
And still you are answering patiently to them.
You are good, keep it up!
  • Damien
Thanks for your kind words. I really appreciate it. It makes my day.

WILL JAILBREAKING MY IPOD TOUCH FIRST GEN DELETE MY SONGS NOTES CALENDER STUFF APPS ETC.?
cuz my comp got rebooted so ive nothing on it. so if my 1500+ songs 300+ notes and many events get erased ill go insane.
  • Damien
Theoretically, if you are using quickpwn, it will not wipe off your data. BUT, nothing is safe here, either you find a way to backup all your songs or data, or you don't jailbreak at all.
  • Jordan
Where abouts will the IPSW be found? QuickPwn asks for me to find the IPSW and ive no idea where to look
  • Damien
use the spotlight to search for it. It should be in the iTunes downloads folder
  • Jordan
I open up quickpwn and it tells me to connect my device to the computer so it can identify it. I already have it plugged in, so i unplug it and plug it back in and it still doesnt identify it
    what can i do?
  • correna
okay, i have installed quickpwn but when it comes to the step where it identifies my ipod touch second generation, nothing happens! it just stops and nothing happens! please help me!! i really want my ipod touch jailbroke. thank you! :))))))
  • Damien
The quickpwn can't be used on the iPod Touch 2nd gen. refer to the above comments
  • andrew
will it delete my notes and photos?
  • Damien
Theoretically, all your data should still be intact, but accidents do happen and it might cause all your data to lose. The best way is to back up all your data (via iTunes) first.
  • JOHN
UM DAMIEN I NEED TO KNOW IF I CAN JAILBREAK MY IPOD TOUCH 2G STILL IN RECOVERY MODE WITHOUT RESTORING IT WITH IPOD? THANKS IN ADVANCE=)
  • Damien
The iPhone-dev team has released a jailbreaking tool for itouch 2G (Redsnow), it is still in beta and require the command line. You might want to wait a little bit longer for an user-friendly GUI version to release
  • David
I need correct ipsw for 1st gen v2.2.1
  • djsmee
So, have had my iTouch 2g jailbroken for a while now, got it set up pretty well, cydia, icy, installer, installous, etc...
Tonight tried to delete a few apps off my springboard (held down icon till wiggle, and got the 'x' by them) but then when trying to press one of the 'x' s, nothing happens. Tried this on all icons with available 'x' and there is no response. Now getting worried that I can no longer delete anything from the app store or installous, only remove packages with icy, cydia...?? Banging my head over this one, even toggled setting in cydelete thinking I screwed something up in there..but still nothing...in fact cydelete is useless at this point...any ideas would be great! Thanks...
  • mohho

  • Damien
I hope you still have your last backup available. I would recommend you to restore your iPhone to the factory setting, restore your backup, then do the jailbreaking procedure all over again.
  • bob
umm is it that im failing the dfu mode., cause i cant ever enter it , whats wrong. it says i fail
  • eve
HELP!!! i jailbroke my Itouch last night and it seemed to work fine but as soon as i shut it off it wont turn BACK ON!!!! PLEASE PLEASE HELP!!!!
  • Damien
Set it to DFU mode and restore from iTunes. Make sure that you are using the correct QuickPwn for your firmware. Follow the instructions in the article to jailbreak again.

The instruction to set iPod to DFU mode can be found in the comments above.
  • Taylor
    HELP!.
My ipod wont restore! I hold down the home and power button, and my iTunes says it needs to be restored, but it keeps saying that there is an error and it cant get restored. PLEASE HELP! :(
  • Damien
Did you get your ipod to go into DFU mode? Hold the home and power button for 10 seconds, then release the power button and hold the home button for another 10 seconds. You have to try several times to get to DFU mode.
  • Taylor
I'm not sure, but when it goes into restore mode, my iPod just shuts off, like half way through the restoring process.
I had sure it was fully charged.... BUt still, same results....
  • Taylor
I did that like 50 times already.
    Still nothing.
    I think its broken forever!!
  • Trevor
my computer runs windows and i have the little pineapple on my desktop but i dont have archive utility. i used something else to unzip it and now it wont open. what should i do?
  • Trevor
how do I get quickpwn for windows?
  • Jv23
something is wrong with my ipod touch 1st generation. after following the instruction, the screen is stuck on the apple symbol and isn't changing at all for the last half hour. I'm waiting for my ipod to run out of battery but if someone can explain whats going on and how to fix it it would be of great help. I also tried restarting it by holding the power and home button together but that did not work either. HElp PLEASE!!
  • Damien
I have the same problem when I jailbreak the latest firmware. This is what I do:

1)Hold the power and Home button for 10 seconds, then release the power button and hold the Home button for another 10 seconds. This bring the iPod touch to DFU mode.

    2) Connect to iTunes to restore the firmware.

    3) Use Quickpwn to jailbreak again

    4) This time, even though it seems to hang, but it is actually running modification processes inside. I just leave it alone (for at least 15 minutes). Once it is done, it will bring you back to the Home screen.

    Hope this helps.
  • Taylor
HELP!. I did you you said to do but my ipod wont restore! I held down the home and power button, and my iTunes says it needs to be restored, but it keeps saying that there is an error and it cant get restored. PLEASE HELP! :(
  • Damien
    Try this:

    1. Turn iPod Touch OFF completely.
    2. Plug iPod Touch into PC/MAC while still of.
    3. Turn iPod touch on, then IMMEDIATELY do the following steps:
    4. Hold the 'Home button' and 'sleep/wake' button together for atleast 5 seconds.
    5. The Apple logo will appear
    6. When this happens release the 'sleep/wake' button BUT KEEP HOLD OF 'HOME' BUTTON
    7. Your iPod will reboot (Apple logo)
    6. iTunes will recognise iPod in 'Recovery mode'
    8. You will be able to 'restore' your iPod Touch now.

I used QuickPWN lastnight so I could get the iphonevideorecorder app. Everything worked great. Now this morning, I can't use any of my other apps that I got in the app store. They start to open, then shoot me right back to home screen. I really wanted the recorder. We'll see... hopefully I can get everything working again.
  • Aryamaan
@buydanno, which version of jailbreak do u have? if u have 2.2.1, u will have to downgrade... that did it for me
  • Aryamaan
Hey, I am using Windows Vista and when i connect my iPhone using the usb cable, QuickPwn does not locate it. It isn't a 2nd gen iPhone either.
  • Damien
Did you use the latest version of Quickpwn? You can download the torrent here.
  • correna
i cant get past step five wat do i do it wont ask me the next question
  • joe
can i turn my ipod on and off with no problems
