How To Play .RMVB Files In Ubuntu

real_logoUbuntu does not support .rmvb files by default. Even though you may have installed the Gstreamer codec plugin and VLC (an audio player that supposedly able to play any media format), there is still no way that you can get the .rmvb file to play. There may be many tutorials out there that tell you to configure mplayer to play .rmvb file, but the easiest and fastest way to tackle this is simply install the Real Player for Linux.

Go to Real player for Linux website.

Download the deb package. (do not download the bin file)

realplayer

Double click the downloaded deb file to install the Real Player 11 for Linux.

realplayer-install

Once the installation is done, you should be able to play .rmvb or .rm files.

Right click on the .rmvb file and select “Open with Real Player 11

choose-realplayer

play_with_realplayer

To set Real Player as the default player for all .rmvb files, right click on any .rmvb file and select “Properties

Go to the “Open With” tab.

set-realplayer

Check “RealPlayer 11″ and click Close

That’s it.

Kaffeine is my pick for .rmvb files.

Kaffeine does not play .rmvb files by default. You’ll have to install extra codecs (just like mplayer) to play .rmvb files

I do not, by principle, install any software from real. They used to put spyware “features” in their windows versions, so I use realalternative.
Is there a gstreamer plugin that works with rmvb under ubuntu?

    • http://maketecheasier.com/ Damien

Not that I know of. The alternative to realplayer is to use MPlayer and their binary codec.

Why does RealPlayer insist on installing the postfix mail server on my Ubuntu desktop system? If I uninstall postfix, it also removes realplay. Igor may have a point about the ‘spyware’ issue – even in Linux. I’d like to know what Real Player is doing with postfix, sendmail, etc. before I can completely trust it.

Thanks, its a useful solution… But who here really wants to download any real player software? Do you remember how bad that experience used to be on windows way back when?
