Make doubly sure you get Kdenlive 0.7.4 or later. For me on Ubuntu 9.04 Jaunty 64 bit, this is a breakthrough - perfect install, hasn't crashed yet, everything seems to work, renders to many different codecs are flawless.

The version available through the regular Ubuntu Universe repo, however, is still at 0.7.3. There were still a lot of bugs and hangups with this version. Installing the latest build through the Build Wizard mentioned can be hit and miss and time consuming. For Ubuntu Jaunty and Intrepid, there is another repo with 0.7.4 you can enable and just click to install thereafter. See this thread

@Gen2ly, it's actually an ebuild. I just lumped it in with the others. :)

@Bart, I'm sure your masterpieces are lovely.

@VitaminCM, that sounds like quite a task! As I mentioned in the article, there are still some rough edges to Kdenlive. It is not even at version 1 yet. Make sure you get a good build and test for bugs.

[...] Editing Videos With Kdenlive This is only a brief introduction to a powerful video editing tool. While it is still under heavy development and far from perfect, it looks like a very promising video editing application. The Kdenlive site has documentation, video tutorials and an active forum if you want to learn more. I have found that nothing beats hands-on experience. Make a few test videos and learn all of the features, and after you have mastered them, you can begin creating your future award-winning productions. [...]

I've been waiting for this for a long time. I want to use a PS3 to build a $300 supercomputer for video editing on Linux. (This would probably out perform a loaded PC or Mac for pennies on the dollar) Hopefully this software is up to the task.

My wife and I use dvgrab (comand line) to rip the video of our DV tape, use bulk rename (from Thunar) to something meaningful and burn them to dvd as "negatives". We then use kdenlive to create our little master pieces :-)
