Last I checked, Getright wasn’t really free, and Free Download Manager is a much better alternative I think. Has much of the same functionality and is even open source now. SmartFTP is also not free for commercial use, and Filezilla, which you have listed, and WinSCP, are my favorite alternatives. WinSCP recently added standard FTP support, and now does all 3 popular file transfer protocols, SCP, SFTP and FTP. Personally though, I don’t usually like to consider trial software as ‘free’, especially not being used in a corporate environment. Even if it just has a nag window, using it past a trial period is still a license violation. I’m guessing this is more targeted at home users, but if I’m going to use it at home, I’d probably want to use it at work someday too, and would hate to have to either fork over money for a license or switch software. Overall though, a pretty thorough list.

This is an excellent list, Damien. The list of free security apps is especially helpful, since my Norton subscription will be expiring soon, and I’m not eager to give them more money (as good a service as they provide, it’s not cheap).

I’ll definitely be giving this one a Digg and a Stumble. Keep up the good work.

For data integration, I would add XAware 5.0, http://www.xaware.org, to the list. The XAware project provides real time data integration with a service-oriented flavor. XAware makes other tools and frameworks much more productive by hiding data complexity behind “XML views”. XML views span any number of data sources, and can read data, write data, or transfer data between sets of sources, all within a distributed transaction.

Features and benefits of the XAware project include:

. Eclipse-based Designer: build, test and debug XML views
Engine runs in a standard container (Servlet, J2EE), as an embedded integration engine, or as a standalone batch processor
. Access XML views through common technologies like SOAP, HTTP, messaging, or a Java API
. Improve productivity of ESBs like MuleSource, BPEL engines like ActiveBPEL, application server stacks, and embedded applications, by isolating data access to its proper architectural layer
. Supports database transactions, messaging systems, web services, structured and unstructured text, transformations, cross-system joins, and conditional logic

I was looking for a pdf tool. Thanks! You might want to add: http://www.vertabase.com/contact_testdrive.html for a free test drive of their project management software. They are an important Project Management offering because they they integrate social networking media – message boards, blogs and RSS feeds and interestingly ubiquitous productivity tools – PDFs, Excel and Google spreadsheets.

You really should remove Any Video Converter from the list. Its conversion choices are quite limited, you get only 30 conversions before you need to pay for it, and most importantly, the uninstall fails. You should never ever install software that has a history of uninstall issues.
At the same time, you can add Super from erightSoft for music and film conversions.

          5. change your working directory to C:TEMP: cd c:temp and press Enter
          6. rename .msg files: ren *.msg *.eml
          7. exit DOS Command Prompt: key in exit and press Enter

However, I was surprised to see a lot of unfamiliar programs that are available for free download and which are actually great devices to try. This would only mean that due to the fast development of many computer products, it is highly advisable to be at least familiar with them so as to be updated not only with the latest trends but also for issues on computer security.

Their software also don’t need to run on Java or .NET, like so many open source office suites, so it makes their software very small and efficient.

What about registry cleaners? You should mention something about them, too, because getting all those programs then erase them then getting other ones make you computer go as slow as a turtle. The post is great, but I think you should give some links to free registry cleaner download sites that are good for the PC. For example, I've just read about Glary Utilities, a freeware program that allows you to speed up you computer, clear up junk files, and regain space.
